White House investigating handling of Ukraine phone call transcript

White House lawyers are reportedly looking into how the transcript of President Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was handled prior to its release to the public.

The investigation involves why deputy White House counsel John Eisenberg decided to place the transcript of the call into a secure server typically reserved for extremely sensitive information, according to the New York Times.

The Times reported that the probe may be driven by White House officials looking for a scapegoat for the call that served as the basis for an intelligence community whistleblower complaint, which spurred an impeachment inquiry against Trump by Democrats in the House.

“We released the conversation unredacted showing the whole world the president did nothing wrong,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement.

Several conversations between Trump and other foreign leaders prior to the call with Zelensky were leaked to the press. The leaks pushed the White House to begin keeping some records of calls in the more secure server to protect the records and more easily identify potential leakers, should any more transcripts or contents of the calls appear in the press.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner‘s request for comment.
