ATLANTA (AP) — Supporters of a popular science center in metropolitan Atlanta are trying to save it from possibly closing amid budget cuts.
Backers of Fernbank Science Center are using online petitions, social media and telephone campaigns to build support for the educational facility.
WXIA-TV (http://on.11alive.com/LACkZy ) reports that Fernbank survived an initial round of budget cuts by the Dekalb County School District. But leaders are trying to find a way to save $12 million, so Fernbank may be on the chopping block again.
The superintendent in Dekalb County has proposed cutting Fernbank’s budget by almost 70 percent to help deal with an $85 million budget gap.
The science center reaches about 160,000 county school students each year.
