Biden pitches live fact-checker for debates with Trump

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden proposed on Wednesday a live fact-checker as part of the television presentation of his debate series with President Trump.

Seeking to dismiss questions about whether or not he intends to debate ahead of the 2020 election, the former vice president said he’s looking forward to the chance to spar with Trump. But he also expressed hope for there to be a service that can fact-check statements made by both candidates during the debates that would appear on the TV screen.

“What I’d love to have is crawler at the bottom of the screen, a fact checker, you know when we speak, if we really wanted to do something,” Biden told a reporter in Wilmington, Delaware, who asked if there was anything that might keep him from debating Trump.

Speculation that Biden might seek to bypass the debates reached a fever pitch last week when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi openly called for the former Delaware senator to withdraw from the three events beginning at the end of September.

The moderator list for the debates, released on Wednesday, includes Fox News anchor Chris Wallace, C-SPAN Washington Journal host Steve Scully, and NBC News White House correspondent Kristen Welker.
