LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — The Lafayette City-Parish Council has given preliminary approval to an ordinance that, if given final approval in two weeks, would eliminate a 2 percent rebate given to local businesses as an incentive to pay sales taxes on time.
Consideration of the ordinance comes at a time when Lafayette Consolidated Government officials are struggling to find new revenue for a tight budget. The Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/10IgjDJ ) eliminating that rebate would bring the city of Lafayette an additional $1.4 million annually, and the parish of Lafayette would gain $104,000 each year.
