Warm atmosphere, good food make Hamilton Tavern a must

With the current state of the economy and dire predictions for a quick recovery, good food at reasonable prices is more important than ever. Not to be underestimated, either, is the comfort to be had in a friendly, unpretentious neighborhood establishment.

Hamilton Tavern (www.hamiltontavern.com), which opened in August, meets all of these criteria, and more. There, the drinks are almost more important than the food. Owner Tom Creegan, who also co-owns The Brewer’s Art, has chosen to offer a limited but very good selection of beer and wine.

In addition to Resurrection Ale and other Brewer’s Art house beers, the beer list includes quality microbrews such as Anchor and Abita. Quality wines are offered for $5 to $7 per glass, including a food-friendly Gruner Veltliner.

The menu features traditional bar fare with the volume turned up. Onion rings fried in Natty Boh beer are served with a spicy garlic dipping sauce. Steamed shrimp and clams satisfy the seafood lover. Soups, salads and desserts are bargain-priced. In fact, it’s rare for anything on the menu to exceed $10.

Burgers include a house-made veggie version for $7, served with arugula, tomato, red onion and herb mayonnaise, and a cheeseburger made from local, organically raised Roseda Farms beef and horseradish cheddar cheese for $9. Menu choices are relatively few, but there is something for almost everyone, including vegetarians.

The decor is warm, comfortable and uncluttered, with white walls, a tin ceiling, dark wood and exposed brick. Rustic farm implements function as door handles and railings.

The Hamilton Tavern is at 5517 Harford Road. It opens at 4:30 p.m. daily and is closed Tuesdays. The kitchen closes at 10 p.m. during the week and at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
