According to court documents in the Dominican Republic, prosecutors have identified the man responsible for bankrolling the June 10 attempted murder of former Boston Red Sox star, David Ortiz. The accused man, Alberto Miguel Rodriquez Mota, is currently a wanted fugitive.
Ortiz was shot at close range in the back while at a bar in the Dominican Republic. Though he has had several surgeries he is currently in stable condition recovering at a hospital in Boston.
The recent court documents detail a plan to murder Ortiz that was discussed between Rodriguez Mota and another man, Gabriel Alexander Perez Vizcaíno. The second man is said to be the “go-between” for Rodriguez Mota and the man who was responsible for organizing the hit, Jose Eduardo Ciprián, who was incarcerated at the time. Rodriguez Mota allegedly paid Ciprián and another individual a total of $7,800 to plan the attack the would end the life of Ortiz.
The shooting was further orchestrated by Perez Vizcaíno, known as “The Bone” or “El Hueso,” after he received a photo of Ortiz texted to him by Ciprián. The actual gunman, Rolfi Ferreira Cruz, was unable to flee the scene of the crime after bar patrons captured him and pummeled him until authorities arrived. He confessed to pulling the trigger shortly after being detained, though he claims he meant to shoot someone else.
At present, 10 people are in custody facing charges related to the murder-for-hire scheme. Rodriguez Mota is still at large along with a still-unnamed suspect, and Lusi Alfredo Rivas-Clase, known as “The Surgeon” or “El Cirujano.”
No reason for why Rodriguez Mota would pay $7,800 to have Ortiz killed has been given.
