U.Md. flu outbreak worst seen by school in decade

More than 400 students at the University of Maryland, College Park have been diagnosed with the flu in the campus? worst outbreak in a decade, authorities said.

The university?s health center says students who come in within 24 hours of the onset of the flu can take an antiviral medication that can lessen the symptoms.

The College Park outbreak is the first regionally concentrated flu outbreak, state and city officials said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says flu is widespread in Maryland.

The Baltimore Health Department says flu vaccines provide the best protection. Students at the university can get flu shots at the health center for a small fee. Other tips:

» Wash your hands often and well. Use soap and water, washing for at least 20 seconds and dry with a clean towel or paper towel. Or use an alcohol-based sanitizer, rubbing until your hands are dry. Wash your hands after a cough or sneeze, after using the bathroom, before eating and after contact with someone who is ill.

» Cough and sneeze into a sleeve or tissue. Throw the tissue away after use and remember to wash your hands.

» Keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated, then touches the eyes, nose or mouth.

» Stay home when sick, especially if you have a fever and cough. Avoid work, school and errands.
