HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) — A company that runs a southwestern Michigan electric vehicle battery plant says its employees are on rolling furloughs until demand picks up.
A subsidiary of South Korean company LG Chem tells The Holland Sentinel and WOOD-TV that furloughs began in April. It confirmed Thursday they would continue for the roughly 200 workers. The company says it’s because of a re-timing of the start of battery production as the electric vehicle market develops.

MLive.com reports staff have been working three-fourths of their regular schedules at the Holland-area plant. The company says they’ll continue to get health care benefits.
The plant was awarded $151 million from the government’s investment in advanced batteries and electric vehicles. It drew attention during its 2010 groundbreaking, when President Barack Obama traveled to Michigan for the event.
