Chris Wallace on James Comey: ‘A self-righteousness … that is disturbing’

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace accused former FBI Director James Comey of “self-righteousness,” calling it “disturbing” during a Friday afternoon interview on Shepard Smith Reporting.

Wallace’s remarks come a day after the Justice Department inspector general’s report into Comey’s handling of “sensitive information” was released. The report concluded that there was “no evidence” the former director or his attorneys leaked classified information, but they did claim that he “violated Department or FBI policy.”

Following the release of the report, Comey tweeted that he doesn’t “need a public apology from those who defamed me,” but added that a “a quick message with a ‘sorry we lied about you’ would be nice.”

“There’s a sanctimony, a self-righteousness about James Comey that is disturbing,” Wallace began. “He seems to think that somehow the FBI rules and regulations that apply to the 35,000 other members of that agency don’t apply to him. If he sees a higher purpose, and whatever he believes is right is the higher purpose, then he’ll just go around it.”

“He’s not going to serve a prison term, he’s not even going to be prosecuted, at least for this. We’ll see where the other investigations go, but there’s no question it’s a serious stain on his reputation,” he continued.
