At Virginia, Maryland: Who’s next?

With the Maryland (2-9) football team bottoming out, and rumors of change in leadership, who are some likely candidates? Here’s four:

Al Golden » The former Virginia defensive coordinator has risen Temple from the ashes. The Owls have improved each year under Golden, going from 0-11 in 2005 to 9-2 this season. An obvious fit for the assumed opening at Virginia, but also for Maryland because he has established a strong recruiting base around the Beltway.

Charlie Strong » The NCAA has an abysmal record when it comes to the hiring of African American head coaches. Is there is an untapped pool of talented assistants being overlooked? Strong’s resume suggests so. And who better to recruit the talent-rich Tidewater and Washington areas?

James Franklin » How did this guy go from being the hot guy who can’t lose to the guy you want to buy out? Is this the Jason “Red Jesus” Garrett syndrome? Maybe Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow should trust her initial instincts and give her coach-in-waiting a chance. Or is she worried the move wouldn’t be enough to halt the season-ticket holder exodus?

Brian Billick » He delivered Maryland its only Super Bowl champion. Now how about a BCS title? Billick knows the Xs and Os. And if he can sell his ponderous book, “More Than a Game,” he can sell Maryland. And if you have any doubt that he’s the man, just ask him.
