Shortly after the NBA draft completed Thursday, the projections came out for the 2008 version.

Sitting right there in the top 10 of a number of those mock drafts was All-Examiner first team forward Donte Greene ? a recent Towson Catholic graduate.

Greene will be a freshman at Syracuse this coming season. But he knows someday soon, that his NBA dream will become a reality.

“Its everybody?s dream,” Greene said. “Growing up in the inner city, go up to the NBA, take care of your family. For me, I know I?m eventually going to get there ? but I?m not going to put a time limit on it.”

Greene is spending the summer playing for the USA U-19 National Team, working on his defense and learning to expand his game.

“You get to play against top competition against the world. It?s getting me ready for college,” said Greene from Texas, where he helped the U.S. team down China over the weekend. “They say the overseas game is much tougher than any other game. The style of play ? it?s all preparing me for school.”

He is sharing the court with fellow Syracuse recruit Jonny Flynn, a 6-foot-1 guard from Niagra Falls, N.Y.

Greene scored six points as the American team of prep and college stars defeated the Chinese national team, 91-75.

While Greene polishes his game with the national team, he?s also looking to gain some strength. While his talents lend to him playing both in the paint and on the wing, Greene will be asked to play more physically in college.

His height and weight have varied in reports, but Greene said he?s 6-foot-10, 220 pounds. He?d like to get up to about 235 pounds.

Hoops Web site basketballbeat.com did not have Greene departing for the NBA after his freshman season. But nbadraft.net had Greene going fifth overall.

“It means a lot,” Greene said of the recognition. “I still have a lot of work to do, but it lets you know the work you have done is paying off and that you?re getting noticed.
