Virginia Beach shooting victim couldn’t defend herself in gun-free zone

A family lawyer for one of the victims in the Virginia Beach shooting revealed she had considered bringing a gun because she feared the gunman, but decided against it since she worked in a gun-free zone.

Kate Nixon talked with her husband the night before the shooting about “whether or not she should take a pistol and hide it in her handbag,” attorney Kevin Martingayle told WHRV. She chose not to since it is against the building’s policy to carry a gun, even if someone is licensed to carry.

Nixon was worried about the man who carried out the attack and another individual.

“The night before it happened they had that discussion,” Martingayle said. “So there was obviously something big going on.”

The shooter resigned from his position on the day of the attack, using two legally bought handguns with a legally purchased suppressor. He killed 12 people and wounded four others.

Julie Hill, a Virginia Beach city spokeswoman, told the Virginian-Pilot she was not aware of Nixon’s concerns, but all aspects are being looked into.

“We are going to make sure that we cover everything that is a part of that ongoing investigation,” she said.
