Donald Trump and two of his adult children were spotted Wednesday morning at the home of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who is rumored to be a leading contender to join the presumptive Republican presidential nominee as his running mate.
Trump, Don Jr., Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner arrived at the governor’s residence first thing in the morning, hours after Pence joined the candidate on the campaign trail for a Tuesday night rally in Indianapolis.
The confab with Pence comes 48 hours before Trump is expected to unveil his vice presidential pick at a special campaign event on Friday. The Hoosier State governor joins former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie among the final contenders for the bottom of the ticket.
Prior to their joint appearance on Tuesday, Pence described Trump as “someone who has connected with everyday Americans like no one since Ronald Reagan.”
“I think he has spoken into the frustration and the longings of the American people as no one since the 40th president, and I think you’re going to continue to see him do that,” Pence told reporters before adding that Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton “must never become president of the United States.”
While Trump aims to make his final decision about a running mate ahead of next week’s Republican National Convention, he told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that his desire is to pick someone who can serve as an attack dog and with whom he has personal chemistry.
“You either have it or you don’t. I clearly have it with Chris and Newt,” Trump said, indicating that his rally with Pence was an audition of sorts to see if the two men played well together.
“How’s your governor doing by the way? Good? I think so,” the billionaire told Indiana voters Tuesday night.
“I don’t know if he is going to be your governor or vice president,” he later added.
