4 killed in civilian plane crash near Air Force base in Florida

Four passengers were killed Thursday when a small nonmilitary airplane crashed near the Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, the base confirmed Thursday evening.

Air Force officials said a Beechcraft BE-60 flying from Toledo, Ohio, crashed in a densely wooded area two miles north of the Eglin base’s runway around 10:35 a.m., local time.

“Following the initial investigation, officials have confirmed four fatalities. The original indication was one fatality based on the flight plan documentation filed in Toledo and physical evidence,” Eglin’s public affairs office said in a statement.

Eglin and Okaloosa County emergency crews both responded to the crash.

The county sheriff’s office contacted next of kin to the deceased prior to the Air Force releasing information on the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration will launch an investigation into the cause of the crash.
