American voters dislike Hillary Clinton more than her Republican presidential foe Donald Trump, according to a new poll.
Sixty-one percent of likely U.S. voters viewed the former secretary of state unfavorably. In contrast, 56 percent of respondents viewed Trump negatively, according to a May 14-17 Fox News poll released late Wednesday.
“The standard for unpopular presidential candidates has been Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in 1980, but we have two new champions,” said Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who conducted the Fox News Poll. “Clinton and Trump rate lower than disastrous candidates like Mondale or Dole.”
Clinton’s numbers are the highest unfavorability ratings she has received. It was a jump from 58 percent in March and 56 percent in September. The increase may be due to stronger attacks from Democratic rival Bernie Sanders.
Trump’s disapproval numbers fell from 65 percent two months earlier. His approval among women also has improved since March. He jumped from 30 to 33 percent in favorable ratings among women and down from 67 to 63 percent among those who see him negatively.
The poll, conducted by phone of registered voters, has a 3 percent margin of error.
