Running backs

Mike Sellers

6-foot-3, 273 pounds

Sellers became a more consistent blocker in 2008 en route to a Pro Bowl bid. One reason? He was more decisive. At times in the past, given the choice of two defenders, he would hesitate and whiff. That didn’t happen as much last season.

Thursday, he steamrolled Reed Doughty, coming up on a run around right end. The Redskins would like Sellers to show more consistent hands this season.

Anthony Alridge

5-foot-9, 175 pounds

His speed is hard to miss. But it won’t do him any good if he keeps fumbling. Alridge, who missed last season with a foot injury, needs to be more patient.

‘’He’s trying to get to the opening before he gets the ball,’’ running backs coach Stump Mitchell said. ‘’He might have to cut back or bounce it but he can’t do any of that until he gets the ball.’’

Alridge fumbled one ball downfield Thursday, getting stripped after a long catch. He could help on kick returns, but he must hold onto the ball.

Dominique Dorsey

5-foot-7, 175 pounds

Dorsey is a bit sturdier than Alridge, but he, too, offers the Redskins a different look because of his speed. Dorsey spent four years in the Canadian Football League where he earned an award last season as the league’s most valuable player on special teams.

‘’He’s not afraid of competition,’’ Mitchell said. ‘’When he does pass pickups or anything physical, he’ll get in there and bring all he’s got. He catches the ball better and returns punts better than Anthony at this point in time.’’

He’s also had a couple drops in practice.
