A police officer in Atlanta was run over by an ATV during protests against the death of George Floyd in police custody.
The unnamed police officer sustained “significant injuries” to both legs after being struck by the ATV and was taken to local Grady Memorial Hospital on Saturday, according to police.
“While there, an ATV drove past at a high rate of speed,” the Atlanta Police Department said. “A short time later, the ATV approached the intersection again at a high rate of speed and struck the officer.”
The officer was in stable condition as of Sunday morning. The ATV driver was arrested and taken to the hospital for minor injuries, and police also found marijuana and a handgun in the person’s possession.
Riots have broken out across the country in most major cities, which have led to the destruction of buildings, police cars, and businesses. Just under 1,700 protesters have been arrested since Thursday.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said Sunday that President Trump “should just stop talking” after his comments on the protests and riots were met with backlash.
“He should just stop talking. This is like Charlottesville all over again. He speaks, and he makes it worse. There are times when you should just be quiet. And I wish that he would just be quiet. Or if he can’t be silent, if there is somebody of good sense and good conscience in the White House, put him in front of a teleprompter and pray that he reads it and at least says the right things because he is making it worse,” she told CNN’s State of the Union.
