Lt. Perry Brooks, a 23-year veteran correctional officer, was found dead in his car Friday morning at his northeast Baltimore City home. Baltimore police are investigating his shooting death as a homicide.
Brooks, 48, most recently worked as a supervisor at the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center.
He began his career in the Pre-Release System of the Maryland Division of Correction in 1984.
He worked at Brock Bridge Correctional Facility in Jessup and Central Laundry Facility in Sykesville.
In 1997, Brooks transferred to the Division of Pretrial Detention and Services, which operates Central Booking.
“The Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center has lost one of its most well-liked and professional officers,” said Maj. David Becketts, Brooks? Central Booking colleague and supervisor. “Lt. Brooks exemplified the model correctional officer. He rarely complained and went about his duties with diligence and vigor to get the job done and make sure his staff was safe.”
Police said Brooks was found on the 1900 block of Hillenwood Road by his 12-year-old grandson dead from a “defensive” gun shot wound.
Officers are investigating whether the killing had anything to do with Brooks? job as an officer.
“It?s still very early on in the investigation,” said Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman. “They?re not ruling anything out. They?re going to explore every avenue in his life.”
The Division of Pretrial Detention and Services has made crisis counselors available to its staff.
Police urge anyone with information on Brooks? death to call 410-396-2100.
