Iraq focus of Obama’s Friday anti-Islamic State meeting

Expelling the Islamic State from Iraq will dominate the agenda when President Obama meets with the National Security Council to discuss fighting the terrorist group Friday afternoon.

Obama regularly convenes his top national security advisers to discuss the “counter-ISIL” campaign, and they are set to meet at 3:35 p.m.

They will likely focus on Iraq and the Iraqi security forces-led offensive to recapture Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, from the terrorist group, White House spokesman Eric Schultz told reporters traveling back to Washington with Obama Friday. He tamped down on speculation that Syria and Russia’s bombing there would be the focus.

Schultz was mum on whether Obama is close to a decision regarding next steps for the Syrian civil war.

Obama has addressed the public after such meetings with updates, but is not scheduled to do so Friday.
