Iran sends second secret letter to Obama

Iran’s Supreme Leader secretly sent President Obama a letter seeking a nuclear agreement in exchange for its help against the Islamic State, according to new reports.

The Wall Street Journal on Saturday reported on the existence of the letter, which would be the second secret letter Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has sent the president following an initial secret outreach in 2009.

In his first letter, Khamenei reportedly listed the history of grievances Iran has had with the U.S. over the past 60 years.

The White House would not confirm that a new letter was received or confirm any of the contents of the letter.

Iran faces a March 24 deadline to agree to the overall structure of a deal to curtail its ability to pursue nuclear weapons in exchange for having economic sanctions lifted. The negotiating group working on a deal with Iran is known as the P5+1. It includes the U.S., Russia, China, United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Earlier this week Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, two of the negotiators, said they do not think there will be any further extensions of the talks beyond their July 1 final deadline.
