West Virginia football game at FedEx Field is ‘Sam Huff Day’

Being a four-year letterman, a two-time co-captain and an All-American for football at West Virginia University lends itself to a certain level of celebrity — especially if you are Washington Redskins legend Sam Huff.

The Mountaineers game against the James Madison University on Sept. 15 at FedEx Field in Landover has been officially designated “Sam Huff Day.” Huff will be recognized in a ceremony before the game and at halftime and will also be the Mountaineer’s honorary captain for the game.

Huff played as a linebacker for West Virginia helped lead the team to a 31-7 career record and a berth into the 1954 Sugar Bowl against Georgia Tech. WVU lost the bowl game, but Huff won the attention of the National Football League. He went on to play for the New York Giants and then the Redskins. Huff is only the second WVU alumnus to be inducted into both the college and pro football halls of fame.

Huff, 77, has dedicated nearly 50 years to the Redskins between playing for the them, coaching the team’s linebackers and working as a color commentator on their broadcasts.
