Fox News host Tucker Carlson accused Democrats criticizing President Trump for granting Roger Stone clemency of hypocrisy, asserting they don’t care about the law.
On Friday night, Carlson said those who criticize Trump’s decision to commute Stone’s sentence claiming it violates the rule of law hypocritically allow “the mob” to regularly violate “basic laws,” referring to national unrest following the death of George Floyd.
“Keep a sharp eye out for the ghouls out there who will lecture you about how this is a ‘violation of the rule of law,’ even as our most basic laws are ignored completely by the mob. They don’t care about the law. They care about putting their political opponents in prison, and tonight, they’re not going to be able to. Thank God,” Carlson said.
The White House announced Friday evening the commutation of the three-year prison sentence Trump’s longtime friend and adviser faced as a result of being convicted of charges stemming from the U.S. government’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“His arrest and his trial were nakedly political. It was a set-up,” Carlson said of Stone.
Before Trump signed the executive grant of clemency, Stone, 67, had been ordered to surrender to prison on Tuesday. His emergency appeal to extend his July 14 surrender date because of the coronavirus was rejected by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit earlier in the evening Friday.
The White House statement said Stone “would be put at serious medical risk” if sent to prison.
