Maryland has lost quarterback Perry Hills for the season. On Monday an MRI revealed that the freshman has a torn ACL. Hills is the second starting quarterback for the Terrapins to be lost this year with a torn ACL. Two months ago, junior C.J. Brown went down in a non-contact drill.

Maryland will turn to sophomore Devin Burns and freshman Caleb Rowe. Both performed well in relief in Saturday’s 20-18 loss to North Carolina State after Hills was hurt trying to make a tackle on an interception. Wolfpack linebacker Rickey Dowdy clipped Hills from behind, drawing a 15-yard penalty.

“I am very disappointed for Perry,” Maryland coach Randy Edsall said in a statement. “I was proud of the way he stepped in this season and led out team. Perry is a great competitor and I know how strongly his teammates feel about him. We will do everything we can to support him through the rehab process.”

Hills was the third true freshman to start at quarterback for Maryland. He had completed 97 of 169 passes for 1,336 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He was named ACC rookie of the week after going 11 for 21 for 190 yards in a win over Temple.

Injuries have haunted Maryland (4-3) in Edsall’s two seasons. Last year his defense was decimated by injuries in a 2-10 year in which the Terps also lost starting offensive lineman Andrew Gonnella (broken leg) and quarterback Danny O’Brien (broken arm).
