McIntosh signs one-year deal with Redskins

LB will shift inside in new 3-4 defense

Rocky McIntosh made it clear he wanted a longer deal. But he had almost no choice but to accept the only offer made by the Redskins.

Beating an NFL deadline by less than a day, McIntosh signed the Redskins’ one-year tender offer for $1.759 million. Had he not signed the offer, the Redskins could have reduced it as of Tuesday.

McIntosh wanted a multi-year deal and missed Washington’s first voluntary minicamp as a sign of protest. He attended the Redskins’ second minicamp, hoping it would be viewed as a sign of good faith.

However, many players in McIntosh’s situation — a restricted free agent with uncertainty surrounding the 2011 season because of labor issues — did not receive multi-year deals. He was prevented from becoming an unrestricted free agent because the collective bargaining agreement was not extended.

McIntosh is shifting to inside linebacker in the Redskins’ 3-4 defense after playing on the outside his first four seasons, starting 45 of 62 games.

Meanwhile, corner Carlos Rogers, also restricted, was not bound by the Tuesday deadline. He still has until training camp begins to sign his offer, which he has said he would do.

The Redskins also cut guard Paul Fanaika and kicker Justin Medlock. Graham Gano is the only kicker on the roster.
