Arizona state rep resigns over claim he paid two underage boys $10 each for sex

Arizona state Rep. David Stringer resigned last week after police documents were released showing he was accused of paying two boys under the age of 15 for sex in 1983.

The 71-year-old Republican lawmaker quit Wednesday after he was cornered by the House Ethics Committee, which requested he turn over documents for its investigation into past sex-crime charges against him.

Stringer reportedly turned himself in to police in Baltimore, Md., back in 1983 on eight sex charges according to the police report associated with the case. A boy told police that Stringer had paid them $10 to perform oral sex on him, and that he had performed oral sex on them, too. One of the boys went back multiple times and Stringer allegedly had intercourse with him.

“(Name redacted) said that he has been back to see Mr. Dave at least 10 additional times since the first time,” the report reads. “He said that each time he has been asked to perform acts of fellatio and sodomy with David Stringer.”

According to the report, one of the boys had a developmental disability.

Stringer pleaded guilty to eight counts of unspecified sex crimes and was placed on five years of supervised probation. As part of the arrangement he reportedly had to enroll in a treatment clinic for sex offenders, but had his records expunged in 1990.

Following release of the report, Republican House Speaker Rusty Bowers said he was “sickened.”

“The behavior described in Mr. Stringer’s arrest report is absolutely appalling and sickening,” Bowers said in a statement. “I confronted Mr. Stringer with the information on Wednesday afternoon and again asked him to resign, which he finally did.”
