Michelle Obama: Standing is good for fitness

While promoting her ‘Lets Move!’ initiative, First Lady Michelle Obama told a crowd, who welcomed her with a standing ovation, to sit down.

“You all please, sit down and rest yourselves,” she said to the crowd in Philadelphia, Pa before adding lightly, “I guess standing is good for fitness as well.”

A new study is making headlines this week, reporting that that sitting too much can be worse for your health than smoking.

The First Lady joined HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to open a playground for kids. She was joined by mayors from several other cities.

In her speech, Obama announced that because of local officials participation in the Let’s Move! program kids across America were becoming more active, and eating healthier foods.

“Thanks to Mayor Cornett, folks in Oklahoma City, as he told you, have lost more than a million pounds,” she said, while highlighting efforts around the nation. “That’s just amazing.
