Vermont governor vetoes marijuana legalization bill

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would make his state the ninth to legalize recreational marijuana, but isn’t closing the door to signing off on future legislation that makes certain adjustments.

The bill, which passed through the state legislature earlier this month, would have allowed adults over the age of 21 to possess small amounts of marijuana.

Scott, a Republican, doesn’t necessarily oppose marijuana legalization, but stressed that state lawmakers must make adjustments to address his concerns. In particular he is calling for changes that further protect minors and address drivers under the influence.

Scott also wants to expand a state commission that would create a proposal regarding the taxation and regulation of marijuana.

“We must get this right,” said Scott, according to the Associated Press.
