A 3-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle in Charles County, authorities said.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office identified the child as Elias Masanaa Charles-Kabongo, from Waldorf.
Wednesday afternoon, Charles County sheriff’s officers responded to the 10500 block of Sugarberry Street.
An investigation found that Charles-Kabongo had been sitting in the car seat in the backseat of his mother’s car as she was driving toward her home. Witnesses told authorities that when the mother pulled over on Sugarberry Street and briefly left the car to give a piece of mail to a postal worker, Charles-Kabongo got out of his car seat.
Charles-Kabongo then went behind his mother’s car, walked into the road and was struck by an oncoming SUV, authorities said.
Authorities do not believe that speed was a factor in the accident.
