Local nonprofit organizations have a new source for their publicity needs with the opening last week of Ellicott City-based MJG Communications, a new public relations and marketing firm.
The firm was founded by Nicole Germain, an 11-year veteran of the marketing field. Germain gained experience with several nonprofit groups, including several years as the communications manager for the Ethics Resource Center in D.C.
Q What is the story behind MJG Communications?
A I was working 70 hours per week for another organization when I realized the job was taking time away from my son and husband. I knew there had to be a better way. So I decided to start MJG Communications, named after my son. This would allow me to be a successful career woman and have more time with my family. Now, when my husband brings my son home from school, he runs up to me in my home office, while previously I wasn?t there for him when he came home.
I had been working on the business plan for MJG Communications since 2004, and with the support of my husband, I launched the company.
Q What is the project you are most proud of?
A I am currently working with the William E. Proudford Fund Inc. on a public relations campaign to support sickle cell awareness and education. My work with the organization is purely being done on a pro bono basis as part of MJG Cares, a community service program through MJG Communications. The Williams E. Proudford Fund Inc. is doing some great work on behalf of people with sickle cell disease.
Q What are your future goals for the company?
A My goal is to grow MJG Communications and become one of the leading PR and marketing firms in the mid-Atlantic.
