High winds put restrictions on Maryland bridges

Wind restrictions and warnings are in effect today for motorist driving over the Maryland’s major bridges, as high winds are tearing through the region.

The Maryland Transportation Authority issued the restrictions this afternoon for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, while wind warnings are in effect for Nice Bridge, Francis Scott Key Bridge, Tydings Memorial Bridge and Thomas Hatem Memorial Bridge.

The restrictions prohibits house trailers, empty box trailers and other vehicles subject to high winds from crossing the four-mile Bay Bridge.

The warnings allow such high-profile vehicles to cross the birdge, but motorists are urged to use caution.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for the Baltimore region until 10 tonight. Forecasters say a cold front is producing sustained northwest winds at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts are high as 60 mph.

NWS said the winds could lead to property damage, power outages and fallen trees, and added that motorists traveling on north-south overpasses could experience dangerous crosswinds.

As of 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, Baltimore Gas and Electric reported 18,133 customers without power, with most of the outages in Anne Arundel and Howard counties.
