White House: Absent Rubio gets his D.C. news from the paper

Josh Earnest laid into presidential candidate Marco Rubio Friday by saying the largely absent senator must get all his information on Congress “from the newspaper.”

Earnest was being asked about Rubio’s critique of the administration for allowing a Cuban Hellfire missile to wind up in Cuba. Rubio is a prominent critic of the Cuban government and the U.S.’s decision to thaw relations with that country.

“My guess is he gets most of his information about what’s happening in Congress in the newspaper, based on his attendance record,” a smirking Earnest remarked.

Earnest later declined to comment further on the missile case, and referred reporters to the State Department, which then also declined, citing legal reasons.

Rubio’s attendance record has been a frequent target on the Republican campaign trail, drawing the specific scorn of Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Chris Christie and Rand Paul, among others.
