WATCH: Philly officer recovering after being dragged five blocks by stolen SUV

A west Philadelphia police officer is in recovery after being dragged at least five blocks Tuesday by a driver of a stolen SUV.

Police initially stopped the vehicle around 9:30 p.m. for numerous traffic violations, authorities said.

As officers approached the stolen Nissan, they saw what they believed to be a gun, according to a report.

“The male was reaching for the gun,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “Even though the police officer was telling him to just show his hands, don’t reach for what appeared to be the gun … he reached for the gun very quickly.”

One officer reached inside the vehicle to confront the 25-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released, but the SUV took off. The officer was then pulled away with his legs dragging behind him, police said.

The chaotic scene came to a close when the suspect crashed into two other vehicles and knocked over a mailbox, according to a report. The officer who was dragged is reportedly “shaken up” but in stable condition, police said.
