Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is slated to stump for Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), as the former member of the House Republican leadership crosses party lines to endorse in a key race.
Cheney, who was removed by her GOP colleagues from her role as House Republican conference chairwoman in 2021 due to her criticisms of former President Donald Trump and his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, is set to attend an event on Tuesday evening called an “Evening for Patriotism and Bipartisanship” in Lansing, Michigan.
Cheney and Slotkin both currently serve on the House Armed Services Committee and have placed a strong focus on national security issues.
PENNSYLVANIA ELECTION OFFICIAL WARNS MIDTERM RESULTS WILL TAKE ‘DAYS’ TO PROCESS
“I’m proud to endorse Elissa Slotkin. Serving together on the Armed Services Committee, I have come to know Elissa as a good and honorable public servant who works hard for the people she represents, wants what’s best for the country, and is in this for the right reasons,” Cheney said in a statement. “While Elissa and I have our policy disagreements, at a time when our nation is facing threats at home and abroad, we need serious, responsible, substantive members like Elissa in Congress. I encourage all voters in the 7th District — Republicans, Democrats, and independents — to support her in this election.”
Slotkin is in a neck-and-neck battle against Army veteran and state Sen. Tom Barrett (R) to represent the newly-redrawn 7th Congressional District. The Michigan Democrat thanked Cheney for her support, noting that while they disagree on an array of issues, she feels members need to work across the aisle.
“At a moment when the very heart of our democracy is being challenged, Rep. Cheney’s voice has been critical. I’m grateful for her support in this race and I’m proud of the work we’ve done together to strengthen our national security and America’s role in the world. We all know that our country is going through a difficult moment right now,” she said in a statement.
“But throughout our history, two things have helped us weather times like these: engaged citizens and principled leaders from both sides of the aisle. Rep. Cheney has shown tremendous leadership over the last two years, and while we certainly don’t agree on every issue, I look forward to welcoming her to Michigan’s 7th District next week to discuss the points where all Americans can leave politics aside and put our country above all else.”

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, saw a quick rise in the House GOP conference before her colleagues rebuked her for speaking out on Trump. She lost her primary to her Trump-endorsed opponent Harriet Hageman in August, with the former president having made her one of his top targets. She has taken heat from within the GOP for her decision to join the Jan. 6 select committee, where she serves as co-chair.
The Wyoming Republican, who has hinted at a potential presidential bid, recently told the New York Times she would “much rather serve with Mikie Sherrill, Chrissy Houlahan, and Elissa Slotkin than Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, even though on substance certainly I have big disagreements with the Democratic women I just mentioned.”
