2020 Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden said at a fundraiser that he could have performed better on the Houston debate stage Thursday night.
“Last night I thought was a good night,” Biden said to applause from donors at the Houston event, according to a campaign pool report. “I think I could have done better. I will do better, God willing.”
The former vice president, 76, added, “The fact of the matter is for the first time we had something approaching a debate.”
Biden described previous debates as simply “one minute assertions and 30 second attacks.” Jabbing his primary opponents who have attacked his over 45 year political record, he told his supporters: “This is about the future, this is not about the past.”
He added, “I love it when people say in 1972 you said,” adding that he has respect for all the candidates running for the White House, “all 400 of us”
Biden was attacked on the debate stage and campaign trail for his previous support of busing and his convivial relationships with post segregationist Democrat Senators during the 1970’s.
On Thursday night, he was challenged by ABC News debate moderator Jorge Ramos over the Obama administration’s deportation policy. The former VP was also slammed by former Obama HUD secretary Julian Castro over differences in their healthcare plans
