Duct-taped dog saved

A dog whose snout had been shut with duct tape for nearly a week has been rescued in Western Maryland, police said.

The dog had been spotted several times over the past week in Allegany County, but he ran away into the woods every time someone tried to help him, said the Allegany County Bureau of Police.

Dozens of volunteers and government officials searched for the dog for several days without any success. But a Lonaconing woman found the dog Sunday on her porch. The dog was taken to the Queen City Animal Rescue in Cumberland, and has a new name: Ducky.

Police have charged a pair of 27-year-olds, Ricky Adams of Cumberland and Frederick Lease of Mount Savage, with animal cruelty.

A 33-year-old Upper Marlboro man was killed after losing control of his Corvette in the Third Street Tunnel, D.C. police said.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. Sunday, just north of the South Capitol Street exit. The sports car was traveling south when the driver tried to pass another car and lost control, police said. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car and died.

Police are investigating the possibility that the driver was racing another vehicle. They are waiting to notify the victim’s family before releasing his identity.
