A terror attack at Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine in Paris, left 12 dead on Wednesday. Two of the suspects were still at large on Friday when they were involved in an intense hostage situation with police outside of Paris. The two suspects were ultimately killed.
The 114th Congress was sworn in this week with the GOP taking full control of Congress for the first time in eight years. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was officially recognized as the new Senate Majority Leader and Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, won a third term as Speaker of the House.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., announced this week that she will not seek re-election in 2016 following over two decades in the Senate. Boxer’s departure sets up a battle in California to replace her.
