After three decades of working with Maryland?s volunteer fire services and the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Co., Lee Sachs will step down as president of the Maryland State Firemen?s Association to spend more time with his family, according to an Association news release.

Sachs joined Pikesville Volunteers in 1976 and trained in all disciplines of fire service, earning his certification as both a firefighter and C.R.T. He was also cleared to drive Pikesville?s engines, truck and squad, allowing him to operate at the highest capacity on each piece of equipment.

Sachs? state-level work began in 1981 when he was recruited by former association president, Smith Stathem, to serve on the association?s EMS committee, a position he held for more than 20 years.

Sachs served as the association?s president for the past year. During that time, he worked with the state legislature to pass the Charles W. Riley Firefighter Tuition Reimbursement program.

He also helped dedicate the Maryland Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Annapolis.
