Washington to register voters over Facebook

Politicians in Washington will soon have the ability to organize voter registration drives that take place entirely in the world of Facebook, as the state is set to become the first state to allow voters to register through a Facebook application.

“In this age of social media and more people going online for services, this is a natural way to introduce people to online registration and leverage the power of friends on Facebook to get more people registered,” Shane Hamlin, co-director of elections in the Washington Secretary of State’s office told The Huffington Post.

The application could launch next week, four years after Washington began allowing online voter registration. “Users will still need to provide a driver’s license or state ID card number to continue,” HuffPo notes.

The state says that the application will not cause privacy risks for users. “You are giving your information to us, not Facebook,” Hamlin said.
