Bus bombing in Jerusalem wounds at least 21

A bus exploded in Jerusalem on Monday, wounding nearly a two dozen people in what an Israeli official is calling a bombing.

According to reports, at least 21 people were wounded when a bus in South Jerusalem exploded near the Hebron road. Two people were taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Some of those injured were in a nearby car that caught fire. A second bus also caught fire, but was empty.

Police say the device exploded in the back half of the bus. The head of the emergency department at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center told Israeli Army Radio some of the injuries were caused by flying metal nails and nuts, indicating an attack and not a mechanical issue.

“It was small, but it was definitely a bomb,” the spokeswoman for Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Brachie Sprung, told Reuters.

Suicide bombings on Israeli buses were used during the Palestinian revolt of 2000-2005.

Over the past six months, at least 29 Israelis have been killed in a wave of terror attacks by Palestinians or Israel Arabs.
