Kerry: Climate change is ‘gonna kill us’

Secretary of State John Kerry is warning in a new interview that climate change will wipe out millions of people unless everyone moves away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy.

“We have to move to alternative, renewable energy,” he said in an interview with ATTN. “If we don’t, it’s gonna kill us.”

Kerry is arguably the most vocal supporter of arguments in favor of a clean energy strategy, and has warned repeatedly that human activity is warming the planet at an alarming rate.

“We see higher tides,” he said. “Storm damage is greater.”

He said melting ice is raising water volume in the ocean to levels that are dangerous for coastal cities and towns around the country.

“Every single day, ice that is on land, like Greenland, 80 million metric tons falls off into the water,” he said.

Kerry suggested that a funding increase of at least $100 billion is needed to help prevent the effects of climate change.

“We spent $230 billion last year to clean up after eight storms,” he said. “If $100 billion of that $230 [billion] had been spent on prevention, we would be in better shape.”
