OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young is being honored by both major railroad trade magazines.

Railway Age magazine named Young its railroader of the year for 2012, and Progressive Railroading called Young its railroad innovator of 2012.

Young was Union Pacific’s top executive from 2006 until last March when he announced he was battling pancreatic cancer.

Young stepped down as president and CEO after his diagnosis, but a railroad spokesman said Thursday that Young has remained active as chairman of the railroad’s board.

Jack Koraleski has been Union Pacific’s president and CEO since Young gave up those executive jobs.

Union Pacific is the nation’s largest railroad with more than 32,400 miles of track in 23 states between the West, the Midwest and the Gulf Coast.
