Second quarter review

Halftime: Chiefs 3, Redskins 0

1st Qtr | 2nd Qtr | 3rd Qtr | 4th Qtr

» The offensive line is not the issue in protection. It helps that the Chiefs can’t rush the passer, but give them credit. They’re giving Campbell a pocket and time. And they’re not always keeping in extra blockers to help them. They’ve used enough 3-step drops to change the tempo of the rushers. But they’ve given him enough time to take a couple shots downfield.

» Malcolm Kelly has played one snap so far.

» The Redskins are giving score updates from …. Week 2. Nice. Maybe they need a scoreboard consultant.

» Larry Johnson has 51 yards already; that’s way too much for a guy who was averaging 2.4 yards before the game.

» Albert Haynesworth’s effort is inconsistent.

» The Redskins used a different look on the Chiefs’ third and 8 from the Washington 21. They had Andre Carter at left end, with Brian Orakpo and Jeremy Jarmon to his right, both shaded to the right side of the Chiefs’ line. That’s a lot of speed; the Chiefs ran the fade on a quick drop.

» Neither team has a lot of speed offensively. That’s why both teams will take forever to score on drives (aside from Santana Moss).

» Rocky McIntosh has a stinger; his return is questionable.

» Ladell Betts just isn’t as good picking up the blitz as Clinton Portis. That’s why Jason Campbell was sacked. But give safety Jon McGraw credit as he lowered his shoulder and ran through Betts. A lesson in how to blitz properly.

» Man, that backside toss to Portis, a play that I don’t mind at all, showed the lack of explosiveness by Portis. The Chiefs snuffed it out fine, but Portis was no threat to make either defender there miss.

» Not to harp on this, but this game has a late-December-both-teams-out-of-it feel. Lots of empty seats

» Andre Carter blew up the third-down screen pass with a very fast rush. He’s playing well.

» On the 17-yard pass to Antwaan Randle El near the end of the half, Portis had a nice blitz pickup. Also on the play, Randle El’s head got snapped back on the hit but he held on.

» The Redskins blew the clock management at the end of the first half. After Portis’ 2-yard run on third and 1, they ran one play in the next 20 seconds. Why no spike? Oh, and the next play was a 4-yard toss to Portis. Wasn’t worth it.

» And then the winner: Campbell scrambles on the next play and gained four yards, but with no time outs they had to spike the ball. So in the last 44 seconds, the Redskins ran three plays.

» They’re dreadful.
