Even though the rain stayed away for most of the day, the Yankees had no problem cooling off the Orioles.
Following a brief lightning delay, Baltimore regularly stranded runners in front of their third consecutive sell-out crowd of nearly 48,000, missing scoring chances and falling to New York, 10-6.
Yankee starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang (12-5), scattered nine hits over six innings, allowing just three runs and consistently prevented the Orioles from producing the game-altering hit when it mattered most.
Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, the Orioles (49-55) pulled to within 4-2 on Luis Hernandez?s two-run single with the bases loaded. Brian Roberts, who went 2-for-5, followed by lining what appeared to be a game-tying single, but center fielder Johnny Damon made a an amazing catch to end the rally.
Roberts pulled the Orioles to within 4-3 with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning, and Aubrey Huff?s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning trimmed the Yankees? lead to 5-4.
However, the Yankees (56-49) put the game away in the eighth inning by scoringfive runs off relievers Paul Shuey and Danys Baez.
Roberts ended his day by blasting a two-run home run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Starter Daniel Cabrera (7-11) continued a roller-coaster season for the Orioles, giving up four runs on six hits in six innings.
Earlier in the Orioles? six-game home stand, Cabrera pitched seven shutout innings in a win over Tampa Bay, but failed to carry over any of that momentum Sunday, as he struck out five and walked five, giving him an American League-leading 78 walks this season.
