How the omnibus will make this weekend awesome on Capitol Hill

With some forecasters predicting major snowfall for Washington, D.C., this weekend, the capital’s children can rejoice at their first chance to legally slide down one of the best hills in the city.

The $1.9 trillion omnibus budget passed in December contained one provision that becomes especially relevant this weekend: for the first time since 2001, sledding on Capitol Hill is legal.

The budget instructs the Capitol Police to not enforce the law banning sledding on Capitol Hill, which was passed in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The ban itself didn’t often end up in children being punished, but they were regularly shooed away from Capitol Hill when they were trying to partake in some wintry merriment.

The National Weather Service is warning of a “high threat” of a significant winter storm hitting the capital area on Friday and Saturday.

Some forecasts are predicting a good chance of eight inches of snow, and a sliver of a chance for a crippling 20 inches of snow.
