Macron slams neutral countries for condoning Russian ‘imperialism’ in Ukraine

NEW YORK — French President Emmanuel Macron ripped United Nations member states that have remained neutral during Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine.

“Those who are saying they are not aligned, they are wrong,” Macron told the General Assembly in New York on Tuesday through a translator. “The not aligned, those who are keeping silent, are actually, in a way, complicit with a cause of new imperialism.”

Macron, who has sought to replace former German Chancellor Angela Merkel as a European leader and spearheaded early peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, said Moscow “must see that it cannot impose its will militarily” or by holding “fake” referenda in occupied territory.

Macron also criticized Russia for leveraging energy, food, nuclear power, and information, reiterating his support for the international order and warning of “greater conflict, ongoing conflict” in other regions.

“We are all aware that, today, here, that only an agreement that respects international law will enable peace to come back,” he said. “We are all aware as well that a negotiation will only be successful if Ukraine is liberated and its sovereignty is protected.”

“We should never serve a power that violates these principles … trampling on what we have built together after the Second World War,” he added.

Macron addressed the body after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who condemned Russian sanctions as “unilateral,” “selective,” and “inconsistent with international law.”
