Common Cause fundraises to block Sessions’ confirmation

Liberal political advocacy group Common Cause is starting a fundraising campaign to stop the confirmation of Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions as the next U.S. attorney general.

“A crucial part of the attorney general’s job is to ensure that every American has a free, fair, secure and accessible path to voting as guaranteed by the law — and yesterday Jeff Sessions went on the record showing that he won’t take that responsibility seriously,” wrote Allegra Chapman, Common Cause director of voting and elections, in a fundraising email on Wednesday.

“Letting Jeff Sessions enact his radical, anti-voter agenda with the full power of the Department of Justice would pose a direct threat to our democracy.”

As part of its plan to “safeguard our democracy,” Common Cause will deliver thousands of signatures on a petition to targeted senators’ state offices next week. The cash raised will be used to expand Common Cause’s grassroots efforts to pressure individual senators to block Sessions’ confirmation, according to Chapman.

Hearings on Sessions’ bid to become the next attorney general ended in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.
