The Washington Mystics aim to end a two-game slide tonight when they host the Charlotte Sting at Verizon Center. Washington returns home after losing two straight on the road.
The teams met on May 25 in Charlotte where the Sting handed the Mystics their first loss of the season, 73-63. Mystics coach Richie Adubato said his team learned a lot from that loss and he has stressed the importance of late-game execution. During the game in Charlotte, the teams were tied heading into the final five minutes. But two crucial Mystics turnovers allowed Charlotte to seize the win.
“The teams that win step up their level of play in the last three minutes on both ends of the floor,” Adubato said. “We didn’t do that in Charlotte and it cost us the game.”
Returning to D.C. could also mean a return to the win column. Washington is 4-0 and averaging 92.5 points per game at home. On the road, the Mystics are 0-3 and struggle to score, averaging only 68 points per game. Mystics starting point guard Nikki Teasley said coming home and playing well is just what the team needs.
“The best thing about this sport is that you always have another game to regroup and redeem yourselves,” Teasley said. “So we’re looking forward to [tonight’s] game.”
