Actor Leonardo DiCaprio joined State Secretary John Kerry on Thursday to praise the Obama administration for the actions it has taken to save the world’s oceans, but urged the government to do more on climate change.
“There will be no wonders for our children and our grandchildren to behold, unless we step up and push ourselves to go bigger, to be bolder, and to take action now to protect our oceans before it is too late,” DiCaprio told reporters Thursday afternoon at the third annual “Our Ocean” conference. “It’s critical that we keep this momentum up, though, because the future of our oceans continues to be challenged by an astonishingly long list of threats. Warming waters, acidification, plastic pollution, methane release, drilling, overfishing and the destruction of marine ecosystems like coral reefs are pushing our oceans to the very brink.”
DiCaprio was in Washington promoting “Before the Flood,” a new documentary he has worked on for three years, which recently opened at the Toronto Film Festival.
The Oscar winner first attended the global Our Ocean Conference in 2014 and has spoken out on environmental issues for years despite his reliance on a private jet.
