STAR OF THE DAY
Derrick Martin
The third-year cornerback, who gained attention during the offseason for being cited for possessing marijuana at Cleveland’s airport, shined on a morning when only four Ravens cornerbacks practiced. He made the lone interception during 11-on-11 drills, grabbing a Joe Flacco pass off a deflection. Martin, playing opposite David Pittman on the second team defense, nearly made two other interceptions and drew post-practice praise from Coach John Harbaugh.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Mark Clayton
The wide receiver ran by Pittman on a deep route and hauled in a 40-yard pass from quarterback Troy Smith. Clayton juggled briefly and received a loud ovation from fans when he secured the pass as Pittman dragged him down.
YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN
Cory Ross
The diminutive running back took a tumble after slamming into linebacker Bart Scott during an 11-on-11 drill. Defenders normally just reach out and touch ball carriers during the limited contact drill. But as Ross took the hand off and ran straight into Scott, the impact could be heard from the opposite end of the field. Scott barely flinched while Ross landed on the grass.
QUARTERBACK BATTLE
None of the quarterbacks was particularly impressive, and the receivers, without Derrick Mason (rest), didn’t do them any favors. Flacco threw an interception. Smith looked hesitant at times, but threw a long pass to Clayton. Boller and Flacco performed well during a drill in which two wide receivers worked against three defensive backs. While that drill took place, Smith worked with the running backs and tight ends. He managed to pull the defensive line offside with his cadence several times.
STOCK MARKET
RISING
Kerry Reed
The receiving corps. did not impress Monday, but Reed improved his standing among the young players battling for a roster spot by getting open to catch a pair of quick slants.
FALLING
Allen Patrick
With Willis McGahee out, the rookie running back is battling Cory Ross for the second spot behind Ray Rice. The former Oklahoma standout clearly is behind Ross right now, and he didn’t help his cause Monday letting a Troy Smith pass go right through his hands.
