Checking in….with Lou Dobbs

“I see it, frankly, as an outrage against the national interest of the United States and I won’t sugarcoat that at all.” (ap photo)

Today’s state visit by Mexican President Felipe Calderon got us thinking: Where in all that is holy is Lou Dobbs? The irascible, bellicose former CNN news anchor quit his sphere in November, 2009 — hinting broadly of a run for president, a continued high profile enabling birthers and at the very least, a radio show.

“Some leaders in media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN,” Dobbs told his audience at the time, “and to engage in constructive problem-solving, as well as to contribute positively to a better understanding of the great issues of our day.”

Phew! Is that all? Yet somehow, Lou Dobbs fell off our radar. Granted, we don’t get much radio at the White House. Our pal Peter Wallsten at the Wall Street Journal profiled Dobbs last month, and found the rapacious former television personality on a bit of a “reinvention tour.”

He’s pondering the future—perhaps a run in 2012 for U.S. Senate in his home state of New Jersey, maybe even the presidency. But smoothing the pointed edges of his profile is no easy task.

Many remember his role in helping quash an immigration overhaul in 2007, when, for example, he aired a report — later discredited — saying illegal immigrants caused a spike in leprosy. He once likened Mexican illegal immigrants to “an army of invaders.”

Oh, right — the leprosy thing. Today, Dobbs is calling Calderon “despicable” for taking issue with Arizona’s new immigration laws “within his first hour of being in this country.” The temerity of the man! Also on today’s show: Al Gore’s “deep psychosis.” While you await his presidential run, you can also follow Lou on Twitter and o-m-g — Dobbs will address the tea party convention in Las Vegas in July.
